Diagnosis and management of migraine and its overlap with jaw, facial, and sleep-related conditions at our West Hills, CA orofacial pain practice.
What Is Migraine?
Migraine is a common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent moderate-to-severe headache, often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and worsening with activity. It is diagnosed using criteria from the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3). Migraine frequently overlaps with jaw muscle pain, sleep disturbance, and teeth grinding.
Common Symptoms
- Throbbing or pulsating head pain, often on one side
- Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells
- Nausea or vomiting
- Visual or sensory aura in some patients
- Pain aggravated by routine physical activity
The Migraine, Jaw, and Sleep Connection
Migraine often coexists with temporomandibular disorders and sleep-disordered breathing. Jaw muscle tension, nighttime clenching and grinding (bruxism), and untreated obstructive sleep apnea can act as triggers or amplifiers of headache. Because our practice evaluates the jaw, facial muscles, and sleep together, we can identify and address contributing factors that are often overlooked.
Diagnosis
Evaluation includes a detailed headache history, a clinical examination of the head, jaw, and neck, and screening for sleep and parafunctional habits. This helps distinguish migraine from tension-type headache, cervicogenic headache, and TMD-related pain, which frequently occur together.
Management
Care is tailored to each patient and may include behavioral and lifestyle strategies, management of bruxism with an occlusal appliance, treatment of co-existing sleep apnea, and coordination with a neurologist for preventive or acute migraine medication when appropriate. Addressing jaw and sleep contributors can reduce headache frequency and severity.
